What is tempered glass?

The Safety Glazing Council logo

Tempered glass that has been treated by heat or chemicals to increase its strength. Tempered glass has many benefits, such as safety, which makes it popular and used in many home and commercial building projects.

There are many technical considerations for tempering glass, including glass thickness and cut out sizes. At Clearlight Glass and Mirror, our experts are prepared to help you through all the detailed considerations if your requirements call for:

  • Tempering specialty glass
  • Beveling tempered glass
  • Tempering heavy glass

Glass tempering logo

A tempering logo is a small etching that is made in one corner of each piece of glass indicating that it has been tempered and meets government standards for tempered glass. For some decorative projects like tabletops or shelves, you may not want a logo to detract from the beauty of the glass. Laws and regulations vary from area to area, so you’ll need to check with a local building inspector or your contractor to see if your glass requires a logo.

The default for us is to put a logo on the glass, so if do you do not want one, you will need to specify “No Logo” when ordering as we cannot remove a logo once it is on the glass. As an alternative, you can request an official “Certificate Of Tempering” which can be used to prove that your glass is tempered even though it does not have the official logo.

Mirror tempering

If your project requires a tempered mirror, the Clearlight experts are prepared to handle this unique manufacturing process. Once glass has been “silvered” and turned into mirror, it can no longer be tempered. Instead, glass is cut to size, tempered, and then silvered. This is a great option for large commercial projects like:

  • Hotels
  • Banquet halls
  • Dance studios
  • Office buildings

Whether you are a contractor looking to fill a large order, or a homeowner finalizing just a few projects, Clearlight Glass and Mirror can provide custom tempered glass to fulfill any project need. Just contact us today, and let’s see what we can do for you.
